Carpet Cleaning for the Holidays

carpet cleaning for the holidays

The holidays are fast approaching. In fact, there are just 14 days until Thanksgiving, 16 days until Black Friday, 45 days until Christmas, and 51 days until New Years’ Eve. With the holidays also comes a full schedule: shopping, baking, cooking, cleaning, planning, and checking your Naughty and Nice list, not once, but twice.

The holidays provide the perfect opportunity for you to show off your beautifully decorated home. Of all the things on your to-do list, however, carpet cleaning is often the one that is overlooked. Yet getting your carpets cleaned now, in preparation for the magic of the season, can go a long way in making a great first impression on your guests.

  1. Stain Prevention – With more traffic – and large quantities of food – in your home this holiday season, the chance of accidental spills, and subsequent stains increases dramatically. Having your carpets professionally cleaned now, rather than after the guests leave, can protect party fouls from ruining your holiday cheer.
  2. Odor Removal – The holidays should be spent enjoying the company of family and friends, not dealing with pesky odors, and allergies caused by those odors. Hiring a carpet cleaning professional, skilled in odor removal, can ensure your home smells like the holidays rather than musty.
  3. Sanitation – Come Christmas morning, among all the excitement, there’s bound to be a good amount of sitting on the carpet – or crawling under the tree to gather up all the presents left under it the night before. Do we need to even ask: You want to ensure your carpets are clean and fresh for your guests, correct?
  4. Erase Seasons Past – Arizona’s summer months brings sand and dust while its fall months bring rain, mud, and leaves. All of which has a tendency of winding up where it doesn’t belong: your carpets. Start the holiday season off right with a clean slate by scheduling an appointment for carpet cleaning today.

Routine carpet cleaning is the first step in extending the life of your carpet and upholstered furniture. Recommended once every six months, carpet cleaning is best scheduled before the holidays, as chances are you’ll be opening your home to countless holiday visitors. Contact us today to make sure your home looks its best this holiday season.

Air Duct Cleaning: Why You Should Consider It

professional air duct cleaning

Many homeowners believe that they spend far too much on electricity – especially in the summer and winter months. And they’re right! In fact, according to the Department of Energy, heating and cooling accounts for more than half of all residential energy consumption in the United States. And, as if that’s not bad enough, electrical bills are set to rise over the next few years in many parts of the country.

There are many simple, yet effective, energy-efficiency measures that homeowners can use to lower their heating and cooling costs. Adding weather stripping, checking the efficiency of your HVAC equipment, and/or professional air duct cleaning  and sealing can ease the burden of high electric bills. The more measures you enact, the better the energy, and monetary savings.

While most people enjoy a clean home, years can pass before the air ducts are cleaned, thus allowing dust and other contaminants to accumulate. Sealing leaks, repairing damages, and removing just four-tenths of an inch of dust from your duct work can reduce your monthly usage by upwards of 20 percent. This according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It also carries with it the following added benefits:

  • A healthier home environment
  • Longer equipment life
  • Increased monetary savings
  • Reduced energy consumption
  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions
  • Protection for the environment

Professional air duct cleaning can be particularly important when you have an insect or rodent infestation, high summer and winter energy bills, rooms that are difficult to heat and cool, rooms that never seem to be comfortable; no matter the temperature, or there’s visible mold growth. For substantial energy savings, and a healthier home environment, consider having your air ducts professionally cleaned today.

*Air duct cleaning should be conducted once every five years.

Professional Carpet Cleaning Secrets You’ll Want To Know

Carpet Cleaning Secrets

Despite your best efforts, your carpet will eventually fall prey to everyday life’s wear and tear, as well as accidents – more quickly in homes where children and pets are present. The problem with this is that dirty carpets not only look bad, they’re loaded with pollutants, and who knows what else. These pollutants can decrease your home’s indoor air quality as well as cause your carpet fibers to break down more rapidly.

The best way to combat day to day life, and keep your carpets looking like new, is to regularly vacuum your carpets. We recommend vacuuming them s-l-o-w-l-y, in a back and forth motion, so that the lines intersect. Doing this two times a week can remove up to 83% of the dry soil embedded within the fibers of your carpet. When faced with bigger problems such as crushed in candy, tough grease stains, or a pet’s little accidents; the following tips can really come in handy. Regular professional carpet cleaning should be completed as well.

Blot Stains…Don’t Rub Them

Rubbing stains is a BIG no-no! Albeit a lengthier process, blotting is the key to removing any stain, before it gets the chance to set in. Blotting applies a little bit of pressure to the area, whereas, rubbing causes the particles to be ground into the fibers resulting in their premature breakdown. For the best results when blotting, always work from the outside, in.

Grab an Iron and Clean Cloth

Candlelight can have many calming effects – especially when it involves burning aromatherapy candles – but its wax is known for accidentally dripping onto carpets where it quickly dries. To remove spilled wax, simply place a white cloth over the spill, and iron over it to warm it back up (no more than 30 seconds at a time though). Once warmed, use a butter knife to scrape off the wax.

White Vinegar to the Rescue

Does Fido occasionally leave messes on the floor? Simply grab an empty spray bottle, some white vinegar, and baking soda. Using your spray bottle full of white vinegar liberally apply to soiled area(s). Follow with baking soda. Allow to dry. Once dry you can proceed to vacuum up the excess soda. Repeat as needed. This method actually pulls the odor out from your carpet fibers, rather than mask the smell, which can cause Fido to keep having accidents in that area.

Ice…Your New Best Friend

Yuck, you’ve got gum all of your shoes, and now your floor. To remove it from your carpet, gather ice cubes, and place into a resealable Ziploc bag. A frozen cold pack also works. Allow the ice pack to sit on the gum for about 30 minutes (the longer it sits, the easier it is to remove the gum). Once the gum is frozen solid, use a spatula to gently lift the gum off the carpet. Repeat as needed.

Coping With Pet Allergies

pet allergies

Life with pets is never easy – especially if you’re allergic. But, trust me when I say that the rewards of providing an animal with a loving home, far outweigh the drawbacks of pet allergies! Pet lovers throughout the U.S. have successfully reduced their allergy symptoms so that their furry friend doesn’t have to be re-homed, or worse, sent to animal control where they won’t get much or any chance at finding a loving home.

Recent research has shown that approximately six to eight million dogs and cats enter U.S. shelters each year. 30 percent of these animals were surrendered by the only family they ever knew; their owners. Roughly half of all healthy animals don’t make it out of the shelter system alive. Many are euthanized due to fear; which if you ask me is unfair; especially since they’re scared and don’t understand why their family abandoned them.

Contrary to popular belief, there’s no reason to remove your pet from your home, should you be diagnosed with pet allergies that are not life threatening. Both my son and daughter suffer from pet allergies, yet, we have seven combined. You see, there is hope for your allergies, which I assume is why you’re here. If you or a member of your family has been diagnosed with pet allergies here’s a few ways you can reduce them:

Tip 1: Create an “allergy free” zone in the home. Preferably the bedroom. Strictly prohibit pet’s accessing this area. Use a high-efficiency HEPA air cleaner (available at any big box store) in the bedroom. Consider using impermeable mattress and pillow covers as well.

Tip 2: Use HEPA air cleaners throughout the rest of the home. Avoid dust and dander catching furnishings. Have your carpets professionally steam cleaned every six months. Use a “microfilter” bag in the vacuum cleaner, or frequently empty its canister, to effectively catch all allergens.

Tip 3: Bathe your pet weekly. This simple act can drastically reduce the level of allergens on fur. Even cats can learn to love bath time! When looking for a quality shampoo, it pays to check with your veterinarian, or consult a pet care book. Follow directions precisely.

Tip 4: Groom your pets every 6 to 8 weeks. The benefits of pet grooming extend far beyond just making them look and smell better. Grooming is important to both their health and yours. It’s important to carefully research any groomer you’re considering taking Fido to.

Tip 5: Don’t be quick to place blame. Ask your allergist to specifically test for allergies to pet dander, rather than making an assumption, as your pet’s life may be at stake. Are you sensitive to more than one allergen? Then you’ll need to reduce the overall allergen level in your home.

Tip 6: Try immunotherapy (allergy shots). Immunotherapy works by gradually desensitizing a person’s immune system to all of their allergens. Allergists inject allergy-causing proteins under the person’s skin so that the body learns to produce antibodies.

Of course, if you’re considering adopting a pet, knowing full well you suffer from pet allergies then you will definitely want to do your due diligence when picking out your new family member. Low-allergen breeds do exist; typically smaller breeds of dogs. They include

  • Bedlington Terriers
  • Bichon Frise
  • Irish Water Spaniels
  • Kerry Blue Terriers
  • Maltese
  • Poodles (all sizes)
  • Portuguese Water Dogs
  • Schnauzers
  • Soft-Coated Wheaton Terries
  • Hairless Dogs

Many mixed breeds that involve one of these low-allergen breeds can be just as appropriate. If you want a low-allergen dog or cat, make sure to check your local shelters first, as you could be saving a life. You’d be surprised at just how many purebreds are turned into shelters each year!

How to Remove Coffee Stains

coffee stains

Coffee is the world’s favorite beverage. In fact, according to National Coffee Association, 54 percent of Americans over the age of 18 drink 3.1 cups of coffee a day. Java lovers spend approximately $40 billion dollars a year drinking what many refer to as their liquid gold.

If you’re a coffee drinker, then I’m sure you already know the perils of multitasking, or just trying to balance multiple things with a hot cup of coffee in your hands. Spills happen; but stains don’t have to! The following three steps will help you get rid of coffee stains forever.

A Word of Caution

While liquid detergent and white vinegar are fairly mild, it is still a good idea to test the solution somewhere inconspicuous, prior to proceeding. Be sure to wait a few minutes before assessing the results. If the solution seems to be making the situation worse, try removing it immediately using cold water and a clean cloth. If all else fails, contact a professional carpet cleaning company, who can come out and assist you.

Three Easy Steps for the Removal of Coffee Stains

Step #1: Mix one tablespoon of liquid dishwashing detergent (Dawn works great) with one tablespoon white vinegar and two cups of water. The detergent works to dissolve the stain and the vinegar works to dislodge the coffee from the fibers of your carpet.

Step #2: Dampen a clean, non-patterned, cotton cloth in the solution and proceed to gently blotting the stain. Do not rub the stain as this can cause it to spread. Start by blotting the perimeter of the stain and then work your way gradually to its center. Re-moisten the cloth as needed.

Step #3: To absorb the detergent and vinegar mixture, gently blot the affected area with cold water, making sure to use a new cloth. Blot dry with non-patterned paper towels. Repeat process until you receive optimal results (if necessary).

How To: Avoid Crooked Carpet Cleaning Companies

avoid crooked carpet cleaning companies

Finding trustworthy carpet cleaning companies is important – a carpet cleaning job gone wrong can wind up costing you more expense, especially if your satisfaction wasn’t guaranteed.

We at Carpet Cleaning Service AZ have compiled the following tips in hopes that you will be able to identify and subsequently avoid crooked carpet cleaning companies.

Learn How To Avoid Crooked Carpet Cleaning Companies

Tip #1: Appearance & Credentials Matter

Beware of any carpet cleaner that arrives to your home in less than stellar appearance. While you shouldn’t expect a suit and tie, you should expect them to be neat in appearance, and have the correct equipment required to complete the task they’re being hired for.

Their vehicle should additionally be clean, not dented and rusted, and should display the company’s name and phone number if not more. The carpet cleaning company should also be ready to provide proof of insurance, certifications and references upon request – this is important.

Tip #2: Get an Estimate Before They Start Cleaning

Whether you want your carpets, upholstery or tile/grout cleaned, it’s extremely important to get not only one but three written estimates so as to avoid falling victim to crooked carpet cleaning companies. It’s also important to remember that the lowest bidder may not always prove to be the best choice.

An estimate should include:

  • Overall price
  • Breakdown, if more than one service is being done
  • Terms and conditions (always read the fine print)
  • The terms of any implied warranties or guarantees

Tip #3: Remember this Phrase

If it sounds too good to be true; then it probably is. While it is normal for many carpet cleaning companies to offer monthly specials, you should look out for companies offering extremely low prices, as hidden charges are typically involved. This is why it’s so important to get a written estimate (see above).

The Benefits of Clothes Dryer Vent Cleaning

It’s estimated that 16,800 household fires are sparked every year by your clothes dryer – according to the National Fire Protection Association. Why? Because lint and other debris can build up in your clothes dryer vent, which can ultimately cause a reduction in air flow and a buildup of dryer exhaust gasses, thus increasing the chances of your clothes dryer catching fire.

Just the Facts…

Fact: Clothes dryers can be found in 81.5 million homes.

Fact: Failure to clean is the number one cause of clothes dryer fires.

Fact: A full load of wet clothes shouldn’t take more than 40 minutes to dry*.

Fact: The longer it takes to dry your clothes, the more you’ll pay in electricity.

*Depending on the make, model and age of your dryer. Many newer models can have your clothes dry within 20 minutes. Drying times for heavy items such as comforters and blankets may take longer.

Signs to Watch For

  • Clothing takes longer to dry than normal.
  • A musty odor is noticed in your clothing after drying.
  • Clothing seems unusually hot to the touch after drying.
  • Excessive heat is noticed within the room in which the dryer is located.

The Benefits of Clothes Dryer Vent Cleaning

Fire prevention: Considering the fact that failure to clean is the number one cause of all clothes dryer fires (as mentioned previously); the removal of lint and debris is something that should be done professionally once per year.

Reduced energy bills: Clothes dryers are one of the most expensive home appliances to run – thus the longer it take for your clothes to dry the more you’ll end of paying in electricity costs.

Reduced drying times: A full load of wet clothes should typically only take 40 minutes to dry! A clogged clothes dryer vent, however, can double or even triple the time it would normally take for your clothes to fully dry.

Carbon Monoxide Prevention: This benefit is for those of you with gas dryers. An improperly vented or clogged gas dryer vent can potentially emit carbon monoxide into the home as well as cause a fire.

Protecting Your Carpet – 4 Tips You Should Know

Did you just get new carpet? Then this article is for you! When protecting your carpet, and ensuring the quality of your indoor air doesn’t become compromised, it pays to know the following four tips.

#1: Baking Soda and Vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar; your two secret weapons in the battle against carpet stains! If you’ve tried numerous methods for removing stubborn stains from your carpets, these powerful cleaning agents, along with the use of an iron will have them removed in a jiffy. Just follow the directions below:

  1. Using 1 tablespoon of baking soda (depending on size of stain) along with some water, proceed to agitate the stain and rinse thoroughly.
  2. Using a mixture of 1/4 white vinegar and 3/4 water, liberally spray the stain with your newly mixed solution.
  3. Apply a clean, damp, white damp cloth towel over the stain.
  4. Using the steam setting on an iron, iron over the damp towel.

#2: Lose the Shoes

Removing your shoes prior to stepping foot onto your carpeting really does go a long way in ensuring your carpet stays clean for longer lengths of time between professional cleanings. Place a shoe rack or basket near the door to “hold” outside shoes. To further protect your carpet, always wear socks when inside, as the oils from your skin are easily transferable to your carpet.

#3: Vacuums; Your Carpets’ Best Friend

Your carpet is your home’s largest filter. That said, your carpet plays a critical role in the quality of air you breathe inside, and the health of your family. But with everyday life comes dirt, bacteria, germs and debris…kind of disgusting, right? By frequently vacuuming your carpet, with a good quality vacuum once a week (minimum), will allow you to remove the dirt.

#4: Periodic Cleaning; Done by Professionals

Your carpet is one of the most expensive investments you can make as a homeowner. To protect your investment, and improve your home’s indoor air quality, it is necessary to have your carpet professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months.

Professional carpet cleaners, such as those found at Carpet Cleaning Service AZ, begin all cleanings by thoroughly inspecting your carpeting in order to identify any problem areas such as pet or other types of stains.
