When thinking about getting a new carpet or replacing an old one there are a lot of factors that need to be taken into consideration. What kind of fiber you want, the type of pile and density, the weight and texture are some of the most important factors.
The term fiber refers to the material of the carpet itself. This can either be made from wool and other natural materials or from synthetic materials which include acrylic, polyester, nylon and olefin. All these fibers have their pros and cons and you should go over them before making a purchase.

Wool – Wool is actually very durable as well as being naturally stain proof and dirt resistant with an amazing feel. Downside, because of these excellent qualities they are priced higher then most synthetic carpeting.
Acrylic – When it comes to synthetic materials Acrylic is the closest you can get to wool carpeting. Aside from being extremely resistant to static, moths and mildew it is very easy to clean and is fade resistant. Downside, Acrylic carpeting is usually available for mainly commercial use.
Polyester – Polyester is stain-resistant as well as being moth and mildew resistant. Downside, it is not as durable as nylon and is more prone to shedding and pilling then other materials.
Nylon – Nylon is the most common material used for carpeting because of its durability and overall resistance to soiling and mildew. Downside, Nylon is prone to static and pilling.
Olefin – Olefin is actually dyed before it is made into carpet fibers so it is extremely colorfast as well as being very water resistant. Downside, coloring can fade if in direct sun light.
